ABOUT HIGH DESERT HOUSING

Our Mission

High Desert Housing, LLC has been providing permanent supportive housing to the people of our community since 2008 while having over 23 years of experience.

We have been providing affordable rental housing with the intent to provide community-based services needed to help people who are chronically homeless, those may also have long-term disabilities including chronic mental illnesses, physical disabilities, and developmental disabilities.

With a solid background in project based HUD housing, our company has additional experience includes: Section 8 Elderly housing, Section 8 vouchers, PRAC 811s, 202/8 group homes and conventional properties both single and multifamily dwellings.

Currently, the portfolio consists of 10 properties, ranging in size from five units to 25 units, across the state. HDH has been successful in creating properties that are fiscally and physically sound, with a great deal of diligence.

HDH staff works in conjunction with a wide range of community based services such as case management, social workers, medical professionals and family members in an effort to provide a safe, stable environment. Our current resources include but are not limited to the Albuquerque Veterans Hospital, UNM Behavioral Health Unit, New Mexico Coalition to End Homelessness, State of New Mexico Brain Injury Resources, Benchmark Human Services and Therapeutic Living Services.

Our goal is to create a safe space so that our residents may explore opportunities for personal choice and transformative growth. To provide the ongoing motivation and support to make sure each resident has a sense of belonging to a community that comes from social connections with family, friends and neighbors… A place to call home.

High Desert Housing, LLC is a 501(3)c Non-profit Organization

Who we are

Kara Summers

FOUNDER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Kara Summers, High Desert Housing Executive Director

My start in affordable housing began in 1996, as an Occupancy Specialist.  Over the last 23 years my focus has shifted from providing affordable housing to specifically affordable housing for the disabled community.  While our housing portfolio is comprised of group homes and complexes that accommodate limited mobility and wheelchair accessibility, the greatest number of properties are dedicated to providing permanent supportive housing for the chronically mentally ill.

What makes our company different from most is the sole focus on folks who suffer disabilities.  My staff is trained at every opportunity in not just the accounting or maintenance but the human aspect providing for fragile communities.

All of my managers are required to be Certified Occupancy Specialists.  Besides those certifications, two hold Manager of Maintenance Certificates, two hold MOR certifications and 3 hold Certified Financial Specialists.  Our upcoming training included Trauma Informed Care, the massive opioid crises, and of course re-occurring Fair Housing updates.

My goal for our company is to make a permanent impact on state of New Mexico, through our actions, our words and our business practices, to make a safe, beautiful, sustainable place to call home for as many of our fellow New Mexicans as possible.

"We believe that those with challenges deserve a place to call home."
